II. VISUAL INSPECTION AND SAMPLING OF BRICKS
1. Visual Inspection and Sampling as per ASTM C-62 (Specification of Clay made Bricks):
1.1 The brick, as delivered to the site, shall, by visual inspection, conform to the requirements specified by the purchaser or to the sample or samples approved as the standard of comparison and to the sample Passing the tests for physical requirements. Minor indentations or surface cracks incidental to the usual method of manufacture, or the chipping resulting from the customary methods of handling in shipments and delivery, should not be deemed grounds for rejection.
1.2 rick shall be free of defects, deficiencies, and surface treatments including coatings. Because these will interfere with the proper setting of the brick or significantly reduce the strength or performance of the construction.
1.3 Unless otherwise agreed upon by the purchaser and the seller, a delivery of brick may contain not more than 5% broken brick.
1.4 For purpose of tests, bricks that are representative of the commercial product shall be selected by a competent person appointed by the purchaser, the place or places of selection to be designated
when the purchase order is placed. The manufacturer or the seller shall furnish specimens for tests
without charge.
1.5 The brick shall be sampled and tested in accordance with Method ASTM C 67, described later
in this chapter.

2. Methods of Sampling as per ASTM C 67 (Sampling and Testing of Bricks):
2.1 Selection of Test Specimens: For the purpose of the tests (specified in ASTM C 67), full-size brick shall be selected by the purchaser or by his authorised representative. Specimens shall be representative of the lot from which they are selected and shall include specimens representative of
the complete range of colours, textures and sizes in the shipment.
2.2 Number of Specimens: For the compressive strength and absorption determinations, at least ten bricks shall be selected from each lot of 250,000 bricks or a fraction thereof. For larger lots, five individual bricks shall be selected from every 500,000 bricks or fraction thereof contained in the lot.
In no case shall less than ten bricks be taken. Additional specimens may be taken at the discretion of
the purchaser.
2.3 Identification: Each specimen shall be marked so that it may be identified at any time.
3. Sampling of Bricks as per Bangladesh Standard (BDS-208, 1980):
3.1 In order to make the samples to be representative of the lot, Bangladesh Standard on Bricks (BDS-208, 1980) suggests that either a random Sampling procedure or a stratified sampling procedure may be adopted. In random sampling, the sample is taken in such a random way that every brick in the lot has the same chance of being picked, In stratified sampling, the lot is divided into convenient sections, real or imaginary, and the sample is taken from each section at random.
3.2.2 The number of bricks to be selected from a lot for examining visual and dimensional characteristics shall depend on the size of the lot as shown in Table-2. 1. The table also gives the permissible number of defective bricks in the sample.
The lot, if found satisfactory in respect of the visual and dimensional requirements, shall next be
tested for other physical characteristics such as compressive strength, water absorption, efflorescence and warpage. The bricks for this purpose shall be taken at random from those already
drawn for examining visual and dimensional characteristics. The number of bricks to be selected for
this purpose shall be in accordance with the following Table 2.2.
